Re-Elect Paulina Gonzalez-Brito for Peralta Board of Trustees Area 2
My name is Paulina Gonzalez-Brito I currently serve as Peralta Community College District Trustee for Area 2 and President of the Board. I was appointed to take the place of Kevin Jenkins when he was elected as Oakland City Councilmember for District 6 and am currently finishing his term. I am running for re-election to the Peralta Board of Trustees in the November 2024 election.
Education is foundational to racial and economic justice. As trustee I am working to knock down barriers for students of color in East Oakland who have long been ignored or excluded by traditional institutions. Community colleges are a key point of entry for young people looking to make their way and older workers looking to advance their earnings and careers through job training. East Oakland deserves somebody who will fight for them and that is what I do. This is why I am asking for your support to re-elect me to Peralta Board of Trustees in November 2024.
Platform for Peralta:
- Students First: As the mother of a Laney College student with special needs, I know how important it is to center students in all decision making. I've done this since taking office, whether in budget votes, strategic planning, hiring a new chancellor and more. I will continue to put students' needs first by advocating for smaller class sizes, facilities that are not only safe but that students can be proud of, and more resources for student programming.
- Equity: In order to ensure all students succeed we need to place historically marginalized students first and ensure that they have all the tools to succeed. We need to increase recruitment of Black and Brown students and then we need to invest in retaining them until they reach their goals.
- Faculty and Classified Staff make Peralta Work for Students: I support the faculty and staff at Peralta so that they can support students. Students succeed when they have the support of the professionals around them, and those professionals also know what is best for the district they have spent years, sometimes decades, working in. i will listen to faculty and classified staff, and give them the respect they deserve as valued members of our community.
- East Oakland and Peralta: We need to build partnerships with community organizations and faith based organizations to understand the type of programming that the community needs and to share how Peralta can support the economic and financial goals of families and our entire community. Education is economic justice and East Oakland deserves both.
- Support and Accountability: Peralta has a new Chancellor with a long history as a faculty member and administrator and a long career centering racial justice. I will support the new Chancellor as she works to strengthen Peralta, I will also work to hold her accountable to the students and stakeholders she serves.
